National Cost Benefit Analysis for the Waitaki Catchment
Three reports on proposals to take water in the Waitaki catchment have been released by the Ministry of Economic Development. The reports are:
The national cost benefit analysis will inform the development of the Water Allocation Plan for the catchment.
The purpose of the Water Allocation Plan is to provide a framework for decision-making by clearly outlining the objectives, policies, methods and rules to allocate water in the catchment. A Water Allocation Board has been established to develop the plan. The Board has 12 months (from September 2004) to develop and approve the plan.

National Cost Benefit Analysis of Proposals to Take Water from the Waitaki River: Final Report
This report develops a framework for evaluating proposals for water allocation of the Waitaki Catchment. Results will be used to inform development of a water allocation framework and decision making process for resource consent applications.

This report was commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Development to evaluate the economic impact on the electricity sector by Project Aqua, a Meridian Energy proposal to construct six hydro power stations using the waters of the Waitaki River.
