Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act 1991
About 40 percent of New Zealand’s known mineral potential is estimated to be in areas listed in Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act, which are closed to most mineral-related activity.
On 22 March 2010, the Government released a discussion paper to seek public feedback on 7,058 hectares of land considered for removal from Schedule 4 and on 12,400 hectares of land being considered for additon to the schedule 4, as well as a number of related policy initiatives.
The Government received 37,532 submissions on the discussion paper – 32,318 form submissions from individuals using standardised templates provided by organisations such as Greenpeace and Forest & Bird, and 5,234 unique submissions made by individuals and organisations.
After careful consideration of the feedback received in submissions, the Government announced its final decisions in relation to the Schedule 4 process on 20 July 2010.
Outcome of Schedule 4 stocktake process
On 20 July 2010, the Government announced final decisions with respect to Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act 1991.

Public submissions on the Schedule 4 stocktake discussion paper were sought by Wednesday 26 May 2010.
