RWC Government Co-ordination Office and New Zealand 2011 Office
The New Zealand Government was a key partner with the New Zealand Rugby Union in New Zealand’s bid to secure the hosting rights to RWC 2011. We’re committed to staging a successful Tournament, and to ensuring New Zealand makes the most of the opportunities an event of this unprecedented scale and significance presents.
It's estimated the event will contribute over $500 million in additional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to our economy, with almost half of that going into Auckland. With an estimated global audience of over four billion, the event puts New Zealand in the international spotlight like never before.
With that opportunity comes the responsibility of ensuring that New Zealand meets the challenge of staging a world class event.
Since the hosting rights were secured, the New Zealand Government has made a significant investment of over $265 million in the assets and infrastructure required to stage an excellent RWC 2011.
On September 9th 2009, the Government announced its leverage and legacy plans for 2011, and kicked off its next phase of work, with a strong implementation focus – that means mobilising government agencies, the people of New Zealand and New Zealand business to be great hosts, and to seize the economic and social opportunities that this event presents.
Website
To make it easy for people to find out what’s going on with RWC 2011 and how they can get involved, we have developed a website which will act as a one-stop shop for a range of 2011 initiatives that Government agencies are working on, including the nationwide festival.
The website will include a link to the recruitment portal for the volunteer and hosting programmes, an events calendar and information to help all New Zealand businesses get ready. The website will also provide progress reports on major projects, like the Eden Park upgrade and work on Queens Wharf.

RWC Co-ordination Office
The delivery of an excellent Tournament and visitor experience requires effort from a wide range of Government agencies. The RWC Coordination Office within the Ministry of Economic Development has been established to coordinate core Government services to ensure New Zealand is ready on all fronts, from border control and security to transport and infrastructure needs.

New Zealand 2011 Office
The New Zealand 2011 Office is part of MED, and works alongside Rugby New Zealand 2011 at its Wellington head quarters. This office is responsible for implementing the Government’s leverage and legacy plans. Its work includes co-ordinating a national festival and developing and implementing both a business leveraging programme and a host and volunteers programme.

Major Events Management Act
The Major Events Management Act (MEMA) was created in 2007 to provide protection for organisers and sponsors of major international events being held in New Zealand. Its aim is to prevent ambush marketing (creating an unauthorised association between a major event and a brand, good or service) by both protecting the use of key event emblems and words, and providing ‘clean zones’ around stadia where unauthorised advertising is prohibited.
The MEMA also prohibits ticket scalping and people invading the pitch or throwing objects onto that playing surface. The MEMA will help enhance New Zealand’s reputation as a major events destination.
