Strategy
The pages in this section detail the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2010, a landmark document which sets out a comprehensive range of principles, objectives and enablers to promote the sustainable development of the industry to 2010. In June 2003, the New Zealand Tourism Strategy Update document was released to show progress towards achieving the goals as laid out in the Tourism Strategy.
Policy
The Ministry of Tourism works to ensure there is an appropriate policy environment to allow tourism to generate maximum benefits at minimum costs. We analyse issues that have an impact on the New Zealand tourism industry, provide advice to Government, and work with government departments and agencies to make appropriate policies.
Funding
The pages in this section detail the funding programmes managed by the Ministry of Tourism. This includes the Tourism Facilities Grant which provides funding for non-commercial tourism facilities and the Tourism Demand Subsidy Scheme to assist small communities with high tourism flows to invest in water and sewerage infrastructure to sustain their tourism industry.
Local Government
The pages in this section detail local government's role in the tourism sector. Local government provides the core utilities and infrastructure on which the tourism industry depends, including roads, water and sewerage, signage, airports, museums, sports stadia, convention centres, parks and reserves. Local government is also the primary funding source for the Regional Tourism Organisations that market their area, and the Visitor Information Centres that inform our visitors.
Regional Tourism
Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) play a leading role in the New Zealand tourism sector. They act as a bridge between tourism operators, national tourism bodies and local and central government. RTOs are also responsible for destination marketing - the promotion of their regions to potential domestic and international visitors. Learn about key RTONZ projects.
Planning Toolkit
The Tourism Planning Toolkit is a set of tools to help local authorities plan for tourism and tackle specific tourism-related issues. It brings together extensive existing information, as well as developing new resources, that will enable local government to improve tourism destination management in their areas. The Tourism Planning Toolkit was developed as a collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism, Local Government New Zealand and Lincoln University.
