Crown Minerals
Crown Minerals manages the New Zealand Government's oil, gas, minerals and coal resources, known as the Crown Mineral Estate. Its key objectives are to attract investment in exploration and development, and to maximise the return to the Crown from these assets.
Crown Minerals manages the Crown's petroleum and mineral assets (oil, gas, minerals and coal). Its activities include processing and monitoring of prospecting, exploration and mining permits; collecting royalties on the production of minerals, coal and petroleum; and managing associated minerals programmes and regulations. This includes the storage, presentation and release of confidential and publicly available geoscience reports on petroleum, minerals and coal.

Petroleum, minerals and coal technical data can be downloaded free of charge from the Crown Minerals website through an online catalogue.
This data available includes all open file scanned reports and logs, digital well logs and navigation data and full copies of active permit documents.

Within the Ministry
The Crown Minerals Group within the Business Services Branch is responsible for managing the Crown Mineral Estate, whereas the Natural Resources Policy Group of the Energy and Communications Branch is responsible for developing the overall policy.
