Review of Franchising Regulation
The review began in 2008 after reports surfaced of alleged scams involving franchises. Although these appeared to be cases of fraud, which is already suitably dealt with by current laws, it raised the question of whether the legal framework around franchising needed to be changed to provide more protection to franchisees.
Discussion Document
The Ministry released a discussion document in August 2008 to seek views on a range of options for regulation of the franchising sector.

Submissions closed on 21 November 2008.
Cabinet Paper
This Cabinet Paper outlines the main themes arising out of the review and recommends that there is not a case for franchise-specific legislation.
