Ministry of Tourism
The Ministry of Tourism (TMT) was established on 1 January 2002 to provide policy advice (including advice on Crown entities and grants), to manage the tourism core data set and to carry out other tourism research. A key focus of the Ministry is the implementaiton of the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015. Further information about the Ministry can be found on the Ministry of Tourism website.
The Ministry advises the Minister of Tourism on all issues affecting the portfolio. Key policy areas include the role of tourism as a contributor to local and regional economic development, developing Māori tourism capability, improving the environmental performance of tourism, and conserving and sustaining the sector's long-term future.
In addition the Ministry:
- advises on Crown purchase and ownership, particularly in relation to Tourism New Zealand, the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute and tourism facilities grants;
- advises on the Government's involvement in major events and in the development of policy on major events;
- administers the Major Events Development Fund and provides the secretariat for the Inter Agency Events group;
- manages the Crown's tourism land interests in the Wairākei Tourist Park and Rotorua; and
- administers the New Zealand Tourism Board Act 1991, the Tourism and Health
- Resorts Control Act 1908, and the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute Act 1963.
Research
The Ministry manages the tourism core data set, which includes the International Visitor Survey, the Domestic Tourism Survey, the Commercial Accommodation Monitor, the forecasting programme and the Tourism Satellite Accounts. Collectively, these provide information to the private and public sectors to enable high quality decision making. Further information can be found on the Ministry of Tourism - research website.
