The sole location for up-to-date information related to the Ministry of Economic Development's role in managing the radio spectrum resource is now the Radio Spectrum Management website.

The Ministry of Economic Development manages the radio spectrum resource under the Radiocommunications Act 1989 and the Radiocommunications Regulations 2001. Management of the Radio Spectrum resource includes the following:

  • providing primary advice to the Government on the allocation and management of the radio spectrum resource and secondary advice on broadcasting matters;
  • ensuring that spectrum allocations are planned in accordance with sound engineering principles;
  • granting radio licences, registering management rights and spectrum licences;
  • certification of licence applications at the applicant's request;
  • investigating radio interference complaints;
  • conducting licence compliance audit programmes; and
  • conducting audits of radio and electrical products to ensure that they comply with mandated standards.
