Gas & Electrical Safety
The Electricity and Gas Appliance Safety Regime
Energy Safety works to ensure safe appliances and their safe use through industry surveillance and product monitoring. All appliances sold in New Zealand must be safe, in accordance with Electricity and Gas Regulations. The gas and electricity industries have a responsibility to provide safe products and the New Zealand public has a right to expect the appliances they buy to be safe.
The central focus of the gas appliance safety regime is a Mandatory Supplier Declaration where a supplier declaration must be completed and key elements made publicly available before any appliance or specified fitting is legally supplied or installed.
For detailed information on the gas appliance safety regime, see Gas Appliance Safety Regime register.
The electrical appliance safety regime requires that a specified list of electrical appliances require a supplier declaration before they can be legally sold in New Zealand. A separate list of electrical appliances defined as declared articles requires Energy Safety approval or an alternative recognised certification before they can be legally sold in New Zealand
