The Labour-Green cooperation agreement [link to Green Party website] includes a requirement for a Buy Kiwi Made programme to encourage producers to label their goods New Zealand made, and to promote New Zealand made goods. The resulting $11.5 million Buy Kiwi Made government programme comprises a number of initiatives:
- Buy Kiwi Made Regional and Sector Initiatives Fund. The $3 million fund aims to support regional and sector initiatives that have both economic merit and promote the objectives of Buy Kiwi Made;
- Regional event series to be held in the first half of 2007, to raise the profile of the concept of Buy Kiwi Made, to increase awareness of New Zealand made goods, and support the Buy New Zealand Made Campaign Ltd;
- Media marketing campaign to begin in mid-2007, including a Buy Kiwi Made website due to go live in March 2007; and
- Funding of $0.5 million to establish a procurement development group within the Ministry of Economic Development (MED) to be a centre of excellence in procurement practice, training, and public-sector/private sector networking.
