Ozone Layer Protection Act 1996
The Ozone Layer Protection Act, first passed in 1990 and updated in 1996, implements and enhances obligations New Zealand has under the Montreal Protocol [link to UNEP site] to phase out a range of ozone depleting substances. Because New Zealand does not produce these substances, we use a system of import controls to meet our obligations to phase them out, and to limit access to certain products containing them. Persons wishing to import substances or products controlled by the legislation need to apply for import permits or exemptions.
