Organisational Structure
Overview
The Ministry of Economic Development (MED) works directly for the Ministers of Commerce, Communications and Information Technology, Consumer Affairs, Economic Development, Energy and Resources, Regulatory Reform, Rugby World Cup, Small Business and Tourism.
It is divided into eight branches: Business Services; Competition, Trade and Investment; Energy and Communications; Economic Strategy; Industry and Regional Development; Information Technology Group, Organisational Development and Support; and Tourism, Events and Consumer Affairs;

Organisation Structure Overview
Each branch comprises a number of business units or teams lead by a Deputy Secretary or a General Manager.

Business Services Branch
The Business Services branch (BSB) runs the Ministry's business and operational services, including public and business registries, the Companies Office, Energy Safety, the Radio Spectrum Management and Crown Minerals groups, Intellectual Property Office.

Competition, Trade and Investment Branch
The Competition, Trade and Investment branch (CTI) has the key responsibility for providing policy advice on the regulatory and competition frameworks for business.

Economic Strategy Branch
The Economic Strategy branch (ESB) supports MED, government and other departments to develop, articulate and implement strategy that will lead to a step changes in New Zealand’s economic performance.

Energy and Communications Branch
The Energy and Communications branch (ECB) leads the Ministry's strategic priority of improving the quality and reliability of key infrastructural services.

Industry and Regional Development Branch
The Industry and Regional Development branch (I&RD) has provides advice on the Government’s economic, regional and industry development goals. The Government Urban and Economic Development Office (GEUDO) is part of this branch.

Organisational Development and Support Branch
The Organisational Development and Support branch (OD&S) provides specialist advice on organisational development, legal, finance and facilities management, communications, risk management, information technology and knowledge management issues.

Tourism, Events and Consumer Affairs Branch
The Tourism, Events and Consumer Affairs branch (TECA) undertakes research and provides policy advice on matters relating to major events, tourism and consumer issues. This branch includes the Ministries of Consumer Affairs and Tourism.
