Exporting LMOs from New Zealand (Cartagena Protocol)
New Zealand has ratified the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety which regulates the international trade of living modified organisms (LMOs). Under the Protocol, the definition of LMOs also includes all genetically modified organisms as well as organisms where the "parent" organisms are from very different families. The Protocol came into force on 25 May 2005 and new requirements were introduced that must be met before any LMOs can be exported.
