International Relationships
The Ministry takes the lead on the NZ Government’s linkages with a number of key international energy organisations including the International Energy Agency (IEA), APEC Energy Working Group (EWG), and the East Asia Summit (EAS).
These relationships allow New Zealand to participate in high-level multi-national discussions on key energy issues; collaborate in studies and R&D programmes; and develop policy built on the best regional and international information.
International Energy Agency (IEA)
The International Energy Agency (IEA) is an autonomous intergovernmental agency linked to the OECD. Its mandate includes the coordination of oil emergency response measures, energy security, energy R&D, and environmental protection.
APEC Energy Working Group (EWG)
The principal body within APEC handling energy matters is the Energy Working Group (EWG), launched in 1990. The United States has the role of Lead Shepherd, with the Secretariat located in the US Department of Energy in Washington DC.
East Asia Summit Energy Cooperation Task Force (EAS ECTF)

The EAS Energy Cooperation Task Force (ECTF) is an expert working group created to study possible areas of cooperation among EAS members to enhance energy security. The current chair of the EAS ECTF is Thailand, with Japan acting as co-chair.
International Partnership for Energy Development in Island Nations (EDIN)

EDIN is an international partnership between New Zealand, the United States and Iceland which aims to advance the deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency (ie clean energy) technologies in island nations and territories around the world.
International Energy Forum

The International Energy Forum (IEF) is a gathering of world energy Ministers that takes place every two years. It has become the premier "producer-consumer dialogue" between not only IEA and OPEC member countries, but also Russia, China and India.
Australasian Ministerial Councils on Energy
The Ministerial Council on Energy (MCE) and the Ministerial Council on Mineral and Petroleum Resources (MCMPR) are primarily Australian energy councils on which the NZ Minister has voting rights when trans-Tasman issues are on the agenda.
