New Zealand has ratified the Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions which place restrictions on the import and export of specified hazardous and toxic chemicals.

Following consultation in 2003 on the implementation of the Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, the Imports and Exports (Restrictions) Prohibition Order (No 2) 2004 [link to Interim Website of New Zealand Legislation] came into force. This outlines when these hazardous and toxic chemicals may be exported and contains lists of the chemicals as Annexes.

• The Rotterdam Convention
  The Rotterdam Convention aims to promote shared responsibility between exporting and importing countries in the protection of human health and the environment from the harmful effects of certain hazardous substances being traded internationally.
• The Stockholm Convention
  The Stockholm Convention aims to protect human health and the environment from the toxic and bioaccumulative chemicals specified in this Convention.
