Industry New Zealand - BIZ Programme Publications - 12 December 2002

[ Last Updated 14 December 2005 ]

12 December 2002

More than ninety percent of New Zealand businesses employ less than twenty staff. Much of the government's support for these small to medium-sized businesses is provided for through Industry New Zealand's BIZ programme with nationally-available training and information services. The programme aims to add value to businesses by providing free information and upskilling for owner/operators.

Two free BIZ publications have just been published which draw on New Zealand experiences and case studies.

Foundations for Growth: A New Zealand Guide to Business Improvement

This guide to business improvement and business excellence is aimed at established businesses wanting to grow. Engaging in a process of continuous improvement is critical to businesses' survival yet there is a perception that this can't be done without the help of specialists and consultants. The practical guide comprises sections reflecting key business activities: leadership and planning; identifying and working with customers; motivating and developing staff, improving products and services; understanding processes and ensuring quality, information management and developing community relationships. It addresses many of the areas of weaknesses in New Zealand businesses identified in the business capability study Firm Foundations.

Planning for Success: A Do it Yourself Kit for Developing Your Own Business Plan. Updated 2003

This updated resource, which is also available on CD-ROM, is designed to help businesses plan for success. It is a readable, practical guide to building a business plan, and includes a series of "do-it-yourself" templates. The resource, which was compiled by an experienced team of small business advisors, includes material on e-commerce, innovation, exporting and attracting investment, as well as the more familiar business subjects such as marketing, finance and attracting the right staff.

Both publications are free of charge and are available through the network of BIZinfo centres.
