Closer Economic Partnerships / Free Trade Agreements

The Ministry also undertakes research and participates in the negotiations of Closer Economic Partnerships (CEPs) and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with our trading partners.

To date, New Zealand has Closer Economic Partnerships / Free Trade Agreements with the following countries:

Singapore

The New Zealand Singapore Closer Economic Partnership Agreement came into force on 1 January 2001. It includes a sectoral annex on electronic and electrical equipment which relates to the mutual recognition of conformity assessment carried out by assessment bodies in the exporting country.

Thailand

The New Zealand-Thailand Closer Economic Partnership Agreement is scheduled to come into force from 1 July 2005. It included a chapter on Technical Barriers to Trade which makes provisions for the objectives, disciplines and consultative mechanisms that are to be used in resolving problems with regulations, standards and conformity assessment requirements that impede trade.

Australia

The CER between Australia and New Zealand is a comprehensive set of trade and economic arrangements and agreements which underpin substantial flows of merchandise trade, services, investment, labour and visitors between the two countries. It began with the entry into force on 1 January 1983 of the New Zealand Australia Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement.

Singapore, Chile and Brunei Darussalam

The Trans Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement with Singapore, Chile and Brunei Darussalam was concluded on 3 June 2005. It includes a chapter on Technical Barriers to Trade setting out the objectives, disciplines and consultative mechanisms to be used when addressing problems with regulations, standards and conformity assesment requirements that impede trade.

Subject to completion of each party's respective domestic process, the Agreement is expected to come into force by mid 2006.
