ICT Statistics

[ Last Updated 14 October 2005 ]

The ICT Taskforce placed high priority on the need for improved alignment and timeliness of ICT statistics for two reasons:

  • To track the growth of the ICT sector and identify gaps, issues and growth opportunities; and
  • To convey internationally a more complete picture of the New Zealand ICT sector e.g. in OECD data

It noted that improved ICT sector statistics, using internationally accepted templates, would give policy-makers a good basis to assess the importance of the sector, its contribution to the economy and how it changes over time.

As part of the GIF related statistics initiatives, Statistics New Zealand will develop surveys to give an integrated picture of New Zealand's use of ICT resources in the household, by business and by Government. A further survey will be developed for the collection of statistics on Internet Service Providers (ISPs) for the first time. The ICT supply-side survey will be redesigned to meet OECD standards.

Statistics New Zealand will also prepare ICT satellite accounts, providing an overview of the supply and use of ICT goods, services and resources and the value added by the ICT industry. An annual publication of all ICT statistics will be prepared with a view to providing a statistical base for monitoring progress towards the ICT growth target. The first annual publication will be released in 2005/2006.

Total cost: $6.038 million over four years.
