ICT Futureintech (National ICT Awareness Programme)
[ Last Updated 14 October 2005 ]
All GIF Sector Taskforces identified the need to grow, sustain and retain a highly skilled ICT workforce. Rapid growth in the ICT sector will require an adequate supply of appropriately trained graduates. Research indicates that career decisions are made predominately during secondary schooling.
Futureintech is aimed at raising awareness among students, their teachers and parents of ICT as a rewarding career. Students will be exposed to industry role models and both careers advisors and teachers will have an improved understanding of the potential for employment in science, engineering and technology. A partnership between schools and industry will be established and there will be a significant expansion of existing programmes that promote health, science, engineering and technology careers such as Neighbourhood Engineers Awards.
New Zealand Trade and Enterprise has contracted the Institute of Professional Engineers to implement the programme and development is already underway. Regional pilots will commence next year and the national programme will follow the year after.
Total Cost: $5.6 million over four years
