Gas Markets

Total New Zealand gas production in the year ended September 1999, excluding gas reinjected or flared, and LPG extracted, rose 17% to 220.5 PJ compared with 187.9 PJ in the year ended September 1998. In 1999, most gas was produced from the Maui field (72.5%), Kapuni (18.2%), TAWN/Piakau (4.3%), McKee (3.8%), Ngatoro (0.7%) and Kaimiro (0.5%). In 1999, gas was used for electricity generation (42.5%), methanol production (38.7%), industrial/commercial uses (13%), and residential consumption (2.6%).

Natural gas is widely reticulated in the North Island only. Maui Development Ltd (MDL) and NGC own the transmission system, with NGC operating transmission and MDL's pipeline.

There are five gas distribution network owners. Four of these companies also retail gas. There are six gas retailers in all.

Review of New Zealand's Gas Sector 2001-2002

Information Disclosure

Under the Gas (Information Disclosure) Regulations 1997, owners of gas pipelines are required to publicly disclose certain prescribed financial and other information.  See the Information Disclosure page for more details.

Within the Ministry

The Energy Markets Policy Group in the Resources and Networks Branch is responsible for policy relating to competition and regulation of gas markets and land access issues for gas lines.
