Establishment of Small Business Directorate - 11 September 2003

In 2003 The Ministry established a Small Business Directorate within its Industry and Regional Development Branch. It is now part of the Effective Markets Branch. The Directorate is an advocate for small business to and across government. The Directorate seeks to understand and provide a voice for small business opportunities and issues. It assists government to align and co-ordinate delivery of policy and services to small business. The unit provides secretariat services for the Ministers Group for Small Business, the Small Business Advisory Group, and SME Senior Officials Group. This role provides access for business and government communities to engage in effective communication and dialogue.
Focus of the unit includes:
- Informed advocacy
- Effective small business input into development of policies that affect small business
- Developing better understanding of Small Business
- Improved government service delivery to Small Business.
Communication between government and business facilitated by the Small Business Directorate is represented in the diagram below. The groups meet independently and with each other to ensure ministers and government is informed on issues facing small business, as well as progress and priorities of work undertaking by government agencies.
