What is it?

The Growth and Innovation Advisory Board is a private sector Ministerial advisory group. It was appointed by the government in May 2002 to provide an independent perspective on growth and innovation issues. The Board sits to one side of the day-to-day government machinery, providing the government with access to ideas, views and advice that might not otherwise be available to it.

The Ministry of Economic Development hosts the secretariat for the Board. You can read more about the Board, including terms of reference and membership, on its website.

What the Board has been doing?

Agribusiness

The Board has been working over the last year with officials and the private sector to help New Zealand's primary industries enhance their role as our leading export earner. It commissioned the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to produce a study to gain a greater understanding of the potential of our land-based primary sector.

Infrastructure

The business-government leaders forum, which the Board hosted in October 2002 identified infrastructure as a key issue related to growth. Following on from this, the board commissioned research into how business viewed infrastructure as a constraint on growth. This report highlighted the need to focus on being prepared for the future in infrastructure strategy and planning. As a result, the Board hosted an infrastructure forum in November 2003.

Growth culture

The Board completed qualitative and quantitive research into how New Zealanders think and feel about economic growth, and how to help them see how this is relevant to them. The report highlights that New Zealanders consider having values is important, as well as the need for goals to encompass growth that is meaningful for them. The research provides valuable insights into how New Zealanders view growth, how they're already contributing to it, and what scope there is to create greater value from this.
