To be a great Policy Analyst, you need strong analytical skills – the ability to critically look at issues and identify what the problem is, or if there actually is a problem. Policy Analysts also need to be able to think strategically about the wider implications of any issue they are looking at, and then synthesise all of the relevant information in a way that is easy to understand. Clear and concise written communication skills are important, as are great interpersonal skills – such as the ability to explain complex issues and viewpoints to others. Policy Analysts don't work in isolation, rather they work as part of a team and involve stakeholders who are affected by issues. Organisational skills are also important to ensure that you manage projects to meet deadlines.
Graduates who enjoy working here tend to like taking responsibility, enjoy open and lively debate, are able to influence people to take on board new ideas, and are stimulated by the challenge of taking an analytical approach to thinking about issues that affect New Zealand's economy.
Nadine Brown, Policy Analyst
"Studying arts gave me a solid grounding in the most important skills for my work at the Ministry of Economic Development - reading, writing and the ability to understand new information. The Ministry is a great place to work as a new graduate. The work areas are of real interest and are continually developing and changing, there are so many opportunities for personal development and growth and it's great to start work with other new grads in the same position as you."
