Growing careers going places

The Ministry of Economic Development is a great place to start your career. We offer intellectually challenging and interesting work, and a great environment to develop your skills and your career.

Challenging Work

Our new graduates work on a wide range of interesting and challenging projects that have a direct impact on New Zealand's economy. Recent graduates have been involved in:

  • preparations for hosting the 2011 Rugby World Cup
  • evaluating business assistance programmes
  • passage of the Telecommunications Amendment Act 2006
  • development of a national energy strategy, and
  • trade discussions with the OECD.

You will get variety in your job through working on a range of projects and interacting with many people from across the public sector and wider business community.

Jo Heard, Policy Analyst

Jo Heard"In my first year at the Ministry I was involved in passing new laws, responding to the collapse of finance systems in New Zealand, and now we are all part of trying to improve the economic situation in New Zealand. The Ministry of Economic Development offers huge opportunities for people at every level, with a diverse range of backgrounds and skills. I really enjoy being able to put in practice much of the economic thinking that I loved at University and work on projects which actually influence and impact on people's lives and the economy."

Learning and Career Development Opportunities

We offer a range of courses and programmes to help our graduates build their knowledge and skills, and we can support graduates to continue further study while they work.

Our graduates development programme includes being rotated into different placements across the ministry. This allows you to experience a variety of work before you decide what suits you best and what you enjoy the most. By working in different areas of the organisation, our graduate rotation programme helps you increase your knowledge of MED and your broad base of skills. We provide an in-depth induction programme and ongoing regular training sessions for development, support and cross-branch networking.

We also offer a Development Awards Programme, which recognise high performance and future potential in the Ministry. The awards are intended to develop managerial skills, specialist skills or leadership potential.

With over 750 employees there are opportunities to further develop your career by moving into different and more advanced roles.

Anna Gibb

Anna Gibb, Solicitor

"Being in the grad programme, I find that everyone in the Ministry is genuinely supportive of my career development - I was really encouraged to rotate roles into another team, although I was welcome to stay where I was. Rotation has been great for my career development. The variety of work in the Ministry and the different roles that I've had mean that I feel like my career options are unrestricted".

Other Benefits

Ministry of Economic Development employees have access to a range of other benefits including flexible working hours, where appropriate and inclusion in our active social club. Details about further benefits can be found on the Working at the Ministry page of our Vacancies section.
