David Smol

Chief Executive
David Smol joined the Ministry in April 2003 as Deputy Secretary of the Resources and Networks branch. In October 2006, the branch was renamed Energy and Communications.
He was previously a director of an Oxford based energy consultancy firm, working for a range of commercial and government clients in the United Kingdom and Europe. Prior to this David worked in New Zealand as an analyst and manager in network industries at the Treasury. He spent two years at the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand and then was part of the team that set up Contact Energy.
David has a BA from Warwick University and a Master of Philosophy in Economics from Cambridge University.
David is the Chief Executive of the Ministry as of 1 July 2008
