Motor Vehicle Traders Registration
[ Last Updated 2 March 2006 ]
Under the Motor Vehicle Sales Act 2003, if an individual or company sells more than six or imports more than three motor vehicles in a 12-month period, they must register as a motor vehicle trader on the new Motor Vehicle Traders Register (MVTR). Car market operators and auctioneers are also required to register. Individuals and companies may also otherwise meet the definition of a motor vehicle trader, even if they transact business online.
For more information visit the MVTR website, which has information about the new law, who needs to register, and how to register as a motor vehicle trader.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs (an operating branch of the Ministry) is managing a consumer and trader education campaign about the new Act [link to MCA website].
Within the Ministry
The MVTR is operated under the auspices of the Companies Office, which is a business unit of the Business Services branch. The Consumer Affairs branch is responsible for providing information for consumers on the Motor Vehicle Sales Act and also provides information for motor vehicle traders on the Act and related laws such as the Consumer Guarantees Act and Fair Trading Act.
