SUMMARY
This information publication outlines significant developments in the New Zealand telecommunications services industry from 1987 up to the present.
The development of competition is described along with brief outlines of service providers, pricing initiatives, prices, discounts, international comparisons and service quality issues.
The main conclusions are that since 1987:
- Deregulation and the threat of competition has resulted in significant improvements in Telecom's operating efficiency, service availability and delivery, to the benefit of both business and residential customers;
- Competition has resulted in substantial improvements, especially in the price of domestic toll services, cellular service, leased circuit and data service tariffs;
- Customers have also benefited from the introduction of new and improved services;
- Further benefits can be expected as competition both intensifies, and widens in terms of the range of service providers.
