First reading of the Trade (Safeguard Measures) Bill - Minister of Commerce Media Statement

[ Last Updated 20 March 2009 ]
Short Description Commerce Minister Simon Power announced that a bill which significantly overhauls New Zealand's regime for imposing "safeguard measures" on imported goods received its first reading.

Author Hon Simon Power, Minister of Commerce

A bill that significantly overhauls New Zealand's regime for imposing "safeguard measures" on imported goods received its first reading in Parliament last week.

The Trade (Safeguard Measures) Bill is designed to ensure New Zealand's safeguard regime is consistent with World Trade Organisation rules, and promotes efficient, transparent, and objective investigative and decision-making processes.

Safeguard measures are emergency measures applied at the border, usually in the form of a duty, to temporarily protect a domestic industry from a surge in imported goods to allow the industry time to adjust to competition from imports.

For more information about the Trade (Safeguard Measures) Bill please see the Commerce Minister, Simon Power's media release.
