New Zealand Submission to the UNFCCC
[ Last Updated 14 April 2009 ]
Short Description
New Zealand Submission to the UNFCCC regarding CCS as a CDM
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol allows countries with a GHG reduction obligation to invest in projects that reduce emissions in developing countries as an alternative to emissions reduction in their own countries. CDM projects are entitled to certified emission reduction (CER) credits which can be counted towards meeting the Kyoto Protocol's obligation. The mechanism therefore aims to assist developing countries in sustainable development while giving obligated countries flexibility in how they achieve their emission reduction targets.
New Zealand supports the inclusion of CCS in the CDM subject to a number of considerations and policy-related issues.
The following document is New Zealand 's submission to the UNFCCC on 16 June 2008 at the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technical Advice's meeting in Berlin.
