18 November 2002

The Associate Minister of Industry and Regional Development released a discussion paper: Bioprospecting in New Zealand: Discussing the Options

21 February 2003

The Ministry hosted a one-day information seminar on bioprospecting in Wellington.

9 July 2007

The Minister of Energy released a discussion document: Bioprospecting: Harnessing Benefits for New Zealand
Forty submissions were received.

July – September 2007

Public seminars on the bioprospecting discussion document were held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch as well as twelve regional hui around the country.

June – August 2008

Four working groups convened to discuss specific aspects of bioprospecting policy
  • Group one: The Convention on Biological Diversity
  • Group Two: Enhancing Benefits for Science
  • Group Three: Traditional Knowledge and Intellectual Property
  • Group Four: Policy Precedents and Definitions
