26 April 2005

A service trial of New Zealand Internet Relay (NZIR) commenced on 15 November 2004 and is scheduled to continue until May 2005. This summary report provides an overview of the trial and recommends the addition of NZIR as a permanent offering under New Zealand Relay.

NZIR is a telecommunications relay service that enables users to make relay calls through an Internet website interface from a computer terminal with an Internet connection. NZIR functions similarly to standard phone relay, with the exception that for NZIR the calls originate from a computer via an Internet connection instead of from a textphone (TTY) or a voice telephone.

The purpose of the trial is to assess service usage and to ensure suitable mechanisms are in place to control use of the service. New Zealand is currently the second country in the world to offer Internet Relay Service. Personal testimonies and feedback received from the user community have overwhelmingly endorsed NZIR, urging the continued availability of the service.
