Short Description
Information on the roadmap to set clear directions for food and beverage research.
Taskforce theme: transformation
Purpose:
To develop a roadmap for food and beverage research, in consultation with industry and science providers, which will set directions for food research in the future. The roadmap will look at the science itself as well as how it is organised and how it can be best directed to benefit New Zealand's food industry.
The roadmap's purpose is to clearly communicate the government's expectations from the food research system.
What we will do:
Roadmaps are developed through discussion and evidence-gathering. The process for previous roadmaps (Energy Research, Nanoscience and Nanotechnologies, Biotechnology Research, Environment Research) involved a wide range of people and organisations with knowledge of the particular area of science, from science, government, business and other interested groups. Roadmap development always involves a formal consultation step.
A clear vision will be developed for how food and beverage research can promote transformation in the food and beverage sector.
How this will help:
This will result in better linkages between food research and real market needs resulting in products that meet market demands. It will also ensure the efforts of government, industry, education and research organisations are aligned and will contribute to the development of major ancillary industries.
Agencies involved:
Ministry of Research, Science and Technology, with input from the Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of Health, Tertiary Education Commission, Foundation for Research, Science and Technology, and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. The consultation process will include research institutes involved in food research and businesses that benefit from food research and those with research programmes of their own.
Timeline:
Consultation expected over the 2007/2008 year, with the final roadmap released in early 2009.
Budget:
Roadmaps are funded as part of MoRST's policy activities.
