A recent Ministry publication, Climate Change: What You Should Know, outlines issues relating to climate change (global warming), Government policies to address it, and how these could impact on businesses.

Climate change caused by the emission of greenhouse gases is potentially the greatest environmental issue facing the international community. New Zealand is part of an international effort to address climate change and has already taken some steps to reduce emissions. However, more will need to be done to enable us to meet our international commitments.

Future climate change policies are likely to increase the cost of energy, and businesses will need to factor the future cost of energy into current investment decisions. Investments that don’t consider the future cost of energy could result in higher operating costs, modification or scrapping in the future.

Businesses that invest and plan wisely will be able to minimise costs, exploit opportunities and/or have a comparative advantage over competitors.
