Short Description Governmental Policy Statement on Electricity Governance (GPS); whereby the Government's overall objective is to ensure that electricity is delivered in an efficient, fair, reliable and environmentally sustainable manner to all classes of consumer.

This version of the Government Policy Statement was released in December 2000. A revised statement was released in February 2002 following a review of the way the electricity system functioned over the winter of 2001.
A new Government Policy Statement on Electricity Governance was published in October 2004.
This version is being made available for historical purposes only.

The Ministerial Inquiry into the Electricity Industry reported to the Minister of Energy on 12 June 2000.

This statement of Government policy has been issued following consideration of the recommendations of the Inquiry. It supplants previous statements of government policy on electricity.

Attachments to this statement deal with objectives and principles for the provision of transmission services, and management of electricity supply risk ("dry-year risk").
