For the purposes of this paper the focus is mainly on biotechnology as it relates to the manipulation and use of genetic materials to create modified life forms, and the products derived from these life forms.

Biotechnological inventions have already had a major impact on a number of New Zealand industries, including medical research, agriculture, animal production and animal health, dairy, beverages, food, and waste processing. The potential applications of biotechnology are very wide and new applications of biotechnological inventions are constantly being developed.
