Roles

The TEC is the government agency responsible for allocating approximately $3.3 billion a year to tertiary education and training offered by universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, wananga, private training establishments, and industry training and adult and community education groups.

A well-functioning tertiary education system has to be a four-way partnership between education providers, learners, the government and employers / the community.

TEC's Stakeholder Engagement Managers (SEMs) support stakeholders to understand the tertiary education system, analyse tertiary education need nationally across critical sectors and industries, and support regional facilitation processes. Contact information for stakeholder engagement managers can be found on the TEC website.

Regional facilitation is a process led by Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics to identify tertiary education gaps and priorities within each region. A wide range of stakeholders and tertiary education organisations are party to the development (and annual updating) of regional statements. Regional statements can be viewed on the TEC's website.

SEMs work with Career Services, NZTE, DoL, and MSD staff in each region. In some regions SEMs are co-located with DoL's Labour Market Knowledge Managers and MSD Labour Market Managers.
