Roles

Local/Central Government Interface Team

The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) actively supports contact between local authorities and central government agencies involved in the community outcomes and implementation processes. DIA's team has responsibility for:

  • Developing and improving relationships by facilitating and supporting contact between local authorities and central government agencies.
  • Sharing information and encouraging good practice.

The team's main focus has been to identify key issues and concerns and establish relationships with local and central government in their regions. Regular meetings with a broad range of central government agency representatives are held to share information and seek joint work opportunities.

Community Advisory Services

Community Development Advisers from 17 regional offices provide information to community groups, to enable them to more effectively meet the needs of individuals, groups and communities. Community advisory services are provided by government, at no charge to community groups, and include:

  • Assistance with planning, including project planning.
  • Provision of funding information.
  • Advice on setting up legal structures.
  • Meeting training needs.
  • Group facilitation.

Funding

The Local Government and Community Branch promotes the building of strong communities by providing advisory services and information, Lottery Grants, Community Organisation Grant Schemes (COGS) and other grants which seek to develop community capacity to address local issues.
