Roles

The Foundation for Research, Science and Technology invests more than $460 million each year on behalf of the New Zealand government, in innovation and fostering the creation of new knowledge and to enhance the wealth and well being of New Zealanders.

Through the Foundation's Technology New Zealand programme, up to $50 million is available for businesses to help fund research and development (R&D) projects, build capacity and capability and reduce technological barriers.

Technology New Zealand is targeting support to sectors that can produce world class companies and improve overall economic performance. The Foundation's Business Managers provide support and advice and work alongside organisations and companies.

In brief, the Foundation is:

  • targeting investment in sectors with high growth potential – food and beverage, specialised manufacturing, biotechnology and ICT
  • working more closely with sectors aligned to government priorities
  • does much more than just invest in research and development – it also builds technical and people capability and helps remove barriers to growth.

Funding

There are two areas of funding available to support research and development. The Technology for Business Growth (TBG) is the flagship scheme, which provides significant R&D investment of up to 50 per cent of project costs for companies developing new technologies. Foundation investment can range from $50,000 to more than $1 million.

The Foundation also pays young scientists and researchers, from undergraduate to doctoral level, to help companies with in-house R&D or technology commercialisation as part of their study programmes.

It can also help with pre-research project activities and help companies overcome commercialisation barriers once the R&D is completed. For example, more companies are taking advantage of Global Expert, a fast, confidential service, provided by the Foundation that locates, pre-screens and qualifies international experts to help New Zealand companies solve their challenging problems.
