Regional Economic Development Managers.

Roles

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) is the government's national economic development agency. It works to stimulate economic growth by helping to boost export earnings, strengthen regional economies, and deliver economic development assistance to industries and individual businesses.

NZTE's strategic goals are to:

  • Build more globally competitive businesses
  • Increase the international connections of New Zealand business
  • Build business capability
  • Improve the environment for enterprise and growth.

To assist in reaching these goals NZTE works with regions. It has 10 offices around New Zealand and works closely with local government, economic development agencies and other allies to grow their regional economic base, to identify and address barriers to growth, and to stimulate and develop new business opportunities.

NZTE's Regional Economic Development Managers liaise with stakeholder groups and provide advice and assistance related to the development and implementation of regional economic development strategies.

Funding

Following the review of regional funding programmes in 2006, regional economic development is now delivered through three programmes: the Enterprising Partnerships Fund, the Enterprising Auckland Fund (administered by MED), and the Regional Strategy Fund (administered by NZTE).

The Regional Strategy Fund provides funding to 14 regions for the development and implementation of broad based regional strategies. Each region is eligible for up to $750,000 over three years. Strategies are developed and executed by a regional governance group who acts on behalf of the wider region. Strategies are developed in consultation with key players in the region and articulate and identify key actions, responsibilities and partners.

NZTE also provides support to businesses (either directly or through third parties) through a range of products and services ranging from the Enterprise Training Programme though to the Escalator Service.

NZTE Regional Economic Development Managers also provide information and advice on the MED administered Enterprising Partnerships Fund.
