Sectoral Composition

For Auckland City, the analysis looked at the sectoral composition and differences between sectors based on the definitions set out in ANZSIC96 V4.0. This separates employment into the following 18 categories:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing
  • Mining
  • Manufacturing
  • Electricity, Gas and Water Supply
  • Construction
  • Wholesale Trade
  • Retail Trade
  • Accommodation, Cafes and Restaurants
  • Transport and Storage
  • Communication Services
  • Finance and Insurance
  • Property and Business Services
  • Government Administration and Defence
  • Education
  • Health and Community Services
  • Cultural and Recreational Services
  • Personal and other Services
  • Not Elsewhere Included

Education Levels

Information on education levels is available from Census data to a considerable degree of disaggregation and the types of educational attainment identified are as follows:

  • No Qualification
  • Fifth Form Qualification
  • Sixth Form Qualification
  • Higher School Qualification
  • Other NZ Secondary School Qualification
  • Overseas Secondary School Qualification
  • Basic Vocational Qualification
  • Skilled Vocational Qualification
  • Intermediate Vocational Qualification
  • Advanced Vocational Qualification
  • Bachelor Degree
  • Higher Degree
  • Highest Qualification Unidentifiable
  • Not Stated

For the purpose of this study and particularly for statistical analysis we have broken the workforce into two educational categories, the first including those with what we have called "Advanced Educational Qualifications" (AEQ), comprising Advanced Vocational Qualifications, Bachelor Degrees and Higher Degrees and the second containing the remainder of the workforce.
