1. Introduction

Draft New Zealand Energy Strategy to 2050

Ministry of Economic Development
[ Last Updated 9 February 2007 ]

This draft action plan provides further detail on initiatives proposed that accompany the draft New Zealand Energy Strategy Powering Our Future. These are discussed under six broad chapter headings:

  • Resilient, low carbon transport;
  • Security of electricity supply;
  • Low emissions power and heat;
  • Using energy more efficiently;
  • Sustainable technologies and innovation;
  • Affordability and wellbeing.

Each chapter identifies the key issues for consideration, and outlines what the government seeks to achieve and how it proposes to achieve it. The chapters also provide details of work already in progress and outline possibilities for longer-term action.

This draft action plan does not provide details on timing, resources, or accountabilities. Its purpose is to identify the direction and range of actions or options as a basis for engagement and refinement with stakeholders. Implementation issues will be considered in the action plan to accompany the final NZES.

A mix of government decisions and proposals for consultation are included in each chapter. Areas where further investigation and analysis would be useful are also signalled. Finally, each chapter ends with a series of questions for consideration and feedback.
