Ministerial Foreword
One of the Government's Key Goals is to grow an inclusive, innovative economy for the benefit of all. The Growth and Innovation Framework sets out our approach to achieving this. The Framework includes the ambitious target of increasing New Zealand's long-term sustainable growth rate, such that per capita income returns to the top half of the OECD and stays there.
The Ministry of Economic Development is a key part of the drive to achieve this objective.
This Statement of Intent for 2004-2007 presents the strategy developed by the Ministry to fulfil its role in improving New Zealand's sustainable economic development. The Ministry has identified five strategic priorities with significant potential to grow the economy, and will concentrate on these as the most important areas of its work. This will involve working across the public sector and engaging with local government, business and communities to advance economic development.
We endorse the strategy outlined in this Statement of Intent as reflecting and supporting the Government's overall strategy for economic development. The Ministry works across nine portfolios to deliver economic development outcomes. This reflects the complexity and centrality of economic development issues to government policy making. Given this broad scope, it's crucial to focus on the things that will make the most difference. The Strategic Priorities provide that focus.
