Appendix 3: Information on Water Allocation Collected as Part of This Project

New Zealand Water Bodies of National Importance for Domestic Use and Industrial Use

P A White, B M H Sharp and R R Reeves, Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences
[ Last Updated 17 January 2006 ]

The following information is appended to the 1999 allocation data of Lincoln Environmental (2000).

A3.1: Auckland Regional Council

Auckland Regional Council provided the locations of the 10 Water Care Services surface water consents (Crane pers. comm.) in the Waitakere Ranges and Hunua Ranges. Allocation volumes are not assigned to Water Care Services' surface consents. Therefore, Water Care Services water use data in this report is the water supplied to Auckland by their 10 water supply dams in the period July 2002 to June 2003 (King pers. comm.) when approximately 108 million m³ were used in the year. The July 2002 to June 2003 use by Water Care is equivalent to 2078230m³/week and this is assigned across the 10 water consents as actual use.

Water use of the Water Care Services Waikato River consent is approximately 10% of the "around 340,000 cubic metres" of total volume of water supplied daily to Auckland (Water Care Services website www.water.co.nz).

A3.2: Environment Waikato

Information on the consent to take water from the Waikato River for Auckland domestic water (Childs pers. comm.):

A3.3: Taranaki Regional Council

The locations of the consents are provided by Taranaki Regional Council (Browne pers. comm.).

A3.4: Marlborough District Council

The locations of 12 water takes are provided by Marlborough District Council (Parker pers. comm.).

A3.5: Tasman District Council

The locations of some of the larger consents in the "ind" use class are provided by Tasman District Council (Westley, pers. comm.).

A3.6: Nelson City Council

The permitted abstractions for 13 river sources used by Nelson City Council are identified from a document on water demand authored by the Nelson City Council (Robb pers. comm.).

A3.7: West Coast Regional Council

Current (2003) water allocation information by catchment, by water source and by type of use was provided by West Coast Regional Council (Bowis, pers. comm.). Data on consent volumes, in L/day in converted to allocation in m³/week. Use in the "ind" class (Table 1) is assigned from a description of the type of use in the consent.

A3.8: Environment Canterbury

Lincoln Environmental (2000) incorrectly codes allocation for water use of one consent to take surface water in the Ashburton catchment. They have the following surface water domestic takes:

Lincoln Environmental (2000) codeAllocation (m³/week)
dom1400
pws685020
rws72576

The "pws" allocation is associated with consent SCY710053 - consent to take water for the Methven auxillary main. Consent SCY710053 is part of a group of consents under notified use L263. All consents under L263 are coded by Lincoln Ventures (2000) as "stock", except SCY710053 which is coded as "pws". Ashburton District Council (Barry Marshall pers. comm.) confirms that the use of this water is primarily for stock. Therefore the allocation of 685020m³/week is assigned to the stock allocation. Allocation of surface water for domestic uses is therefore 1400m³/week plus 72576m³/week or 73976m³/week.

A3.9: Otago Regional Council

An error in the Lincoln Environmental (2000) data in Shag River consent was found on cross-checking data with Otago Regional Council. Consent 4112 had an allocation of 113400m³/week. The actual allocation is 3024m³/week.

The "ind" use class were obtained for consents representing 89% of the industrial allocation in the Shag River catchment and 70% of the industrial allocation in the Clutha River catchment and for the Taieri catchment (Heller pers. comm.).

A3.10: Environment Southland

The locations of consents in the "dri" and "ind" classes are provided by Environment Southland (West pers. comm.).
