Over 3 years have passed since the Patenting Of Life Form Focus Group was formed to have an input from a Maori perspective to a proposed Intellectual Property Law Reform Bill. This Bill is now not proceeding in that form and our report is now put out as an information paper.
The many consultations around the country by the members of our committee were widespread and diligently sought by the members. We need to thank each other for spending time and energy to bring discussions within the Pakeha directions.
To the many young Maori who with their legal backgrounds tried so hard to help our committee, we say thank you. Whilst we have not been able to have this whole report out in Maori, it is hoped that the essence of our tipuna will be encapsulated in this presentation.
We now seek an in-depth discussion by our people throughout the country of this document. Your spirit must be in the final directions - we have only opened the way, you must carry it forward if it is your wish.
The treasures of that which belongs to our people will only flourish if Maori are in control and direct the path we must take.
