Statement of Intent 2005-2008

[ Last Updated 12 January 2006 ]

The Ministry of Economic Development's work is essential to the Government's drive to improve the living standards and well-being of all New Zealanders.

The New Zealand economy has performed well over the last few years and, in many areas, there is a solid platform for future growth. But achieving the Government's goal of returning New Zealand's per capita income to the top half of the OECD rankings requires a concerted effort across the economy.

This Statement of Intent for 2005-2008 spells out the strategy developed by the Ministry to fulfil its part in improving New Zealand's sustainable economic development. The Ministry will focus on five strategic priorities with significant potential to support the drive for economic growth and a rise in per capita incomes. It will work across the public sector, and with local government, business and communities, to advance these strategic priorities.

We endorse the strategy this Statement of Intent outlines as reflecting and supporting the Government's overall strategy for economic development. We confirm that the information it contains is consistent with the policies and performance expectations of the Government.

The Ministry works across nine portfolios to deliver economic development outcomes. This reflects the complexity and centrality of economic development issues to government policy making. Given this broad scope, it is crucial to focus on the things that will make the most difference. The strategic priorities provide that focus.
