[ Last Updated 10 January 2006 ]

This document is a guide to the Energy portfolio and Vote: Energy. It summarises key issues and themes for the next few years. It will be supplemented by separate papers as required.

It accompanies the Ministry of Economic Development's briefing Advancing Economic Development, which outlines the key issues Ministers need to consider when devising their strategy to raise New Zealand's rate of economic growth. Our current Ministry profile describes the Ministry's five strategic priorities and the work being done to progress them. It also profiles our organisational structure and provides contact details for our key managers.

The issues and outputs covered by this briefing are dealt with in three branches within the Ministry of Economic Development. Day to day responsibility for these issues has been delegated as follows:

  • David Smol, Deputy Secretary, Resources and Networks - energy policy
  • Neville Harris, Deputy Secretary, Business Services - management of Crown minerals
  • Elizabeth MacPherson, Deputy Secretary, Consumer Affairs - energy safety issues

Geoff Dangerfield
Chief Executive
