Cetane Number of New Zealand Diesel

Vallabh Patel
[ Last Updated 3 January 2006 ]

  1. A better agreement is found between CN and CI976 than between CN and CI4737 so there is no need to change the test method in the Regulations for CI976.
  2. Companies other than the four established suppliers have entered, or are about to enter, the market. Therefore it is likely that more fuel will come direct from overseas. Thus with the changes in the processes of the local refinery, quality of diesel will be more variable. Therefore it is recommended that half the number of samples collected in FQM programme (about 40 to 50) be tested every second year for CN. This size of sample is most likely to balance costs and benefits, provided sufficient samples are tested to provide a statistically valid result.
