Foreword
This paper describes an investigation into the relationship between cetane number and cetane index of samples for diesel fuel supplied in New Zealand in the period 1 May 1997 to 30 May 1998. It discusses the importance of these properties and the methodology of testing. Results are analysed and presented in graphical form.
The fuel quality monitoring (FQM) programme, which is managed by the Operations and Risk Management Branch of the Ministry of Commerce, is intended to monitor the quality of petroleum fuel, both petrol and diesel, for compliance with the Petroleum Products Specifications Regulations 1995.
The author has worked for the New Zealand Government for many years in related areas and has a wide range of experience in product quality specification of petrol, diesel, natural gas and manufactured fuel gases. He has managed the FQM programme since its inception in 1989.
