Enrolments in University Information Technology and Related Courses 1999

Frank March, Specialist Advisor, Information Technology Advisory Group
[ Last Updated 16 December 2005 ]

Figure 4 (Table 4) shows the contribution of each university to the parameters measured in the survey.

The relevance value of each course was derived according to the calculation provided in Section 5. Courses are weighted according to "relevance" (with values ranging from 1 to 3) and level (with values ranging from 1 to 4). Thus a course equivalent to one eighth of an ETFS would take a relevance value between 1 and 12 depending on its level and relevance. Relevance value points (RVP) are assigned by multiplying the relevance value by the number of students completing the course.

The University of Auckland, being by far the largest university has the highest number of enrolled students. It has both a larger number (and range) of courses than any of the other universities, and a higher share of the relevance value points than its share of enrolments suggesting that it has more "IT relevance" proportionately compared with other universities. This is to be expected given that it has one of the country's two engineering schools. On the other hand, the University of Canterbury, which also has an engineering school, seems to have less "IT relevance" than might be expected.

Comparative pass rates for all courses generally lie within a tight band except for Victoria and Lincoln, which are somewhat higher than the average. Massey has the lowest overall pass rate.
