Report Back on Implementation of the Recommendations of the Ministerial Panel on Business Compliance Costs

June 2003

In December 2000, the government established the 11-member Ministerial Panel on Business Compliance Costs ("the Panel"), as part of a wider strategy to reduce compliance costs. Having sought the views of businesses throughout the country, the Panel submitted 162 recommendations to the government on ways to reduce compliance costs for business.

In December 2001, the government published its response to the Panel's recommendations, Striking the Balance. In that response, the government "Agreed", "Agreed in Part", or "Agreed in Principle" to 131 of the recommendations.

The remaining Panel recommendations had either already been implemented by the time Striking the Balance was published in December 2001, or were not agreed to by the government.

In Striking the Balance, the government agreed to report-back on agencies progress in implementing the Panel's recommendations by 30 June 2003.  Over the past few months, the Ministry has co-ordinated a cross-departmental report-back on implementation of the recommendations.

A media release announcing the publication of this report and Questions and Answers are also provided:
